Wellness Wednesday: Staying Healthy While Traveling

Wellness Wednesday is a series where we focus on topics that benefit our well-being. Wellness has many meanings and many routes to achieve. As always, listen to your body and do what's best for you. 

We got back from Berlin last Wednesday (recap coming soon!). The flight is looong, taking about 8 hours on the way there and 9 hours on the way back. To keep my sanity, I watched all the movies and tv shows and put some solid effort into completing a few NY Times crosswords. I thought I'd share with you my tried and true methods of staying well while flying. 

1. HYDRATE! Can't say it enough. I am very rigid about my water consumption during my day-to-day and can always be found with some sort of vessel holding water at my side. Staying hydrated while flying can be a bit trickier. The air on an airplane has only 10-20% humidity which is much lower than what were use to. To combat the low humidity, I try to bring a water bottle with me to the airport to fill once I'm inside the terminal. For longer flights, there's no way to refill so I'll ask the flight attendant if they can spare a big bottle. If thats not possible, I ask for two drinks when there is beverage service. This time I would ask for a glass of water and a can of sparkling water. I think I drank about four cans of sparkling water on our flight back :)

2. While we're hydrating by drinking all the water, we can't forget to hydrate our skin. When I fly I start the morning off with my daily moisturizing routine (face + eye cream) and no make-up. Once I am on the plane I will use face wipe and then apply a moisturizing mask (this is my current go-to but also love love this). On longer flights I will re-apply once more. Then throughout the whole flight I am constantly applying hand cream to my hands and arms. 

3. Speaking of face wipes. At the beginning of the flight I wipe the seat, arm rests, tray table, and tv screen down with one. Peace of mind. 

4. I have a pretty healthy supplement habit but when I am flying I bump things up a bit. I'll start taking these additional supplements two days before flying so I have a defense already built up. In our house Wellness Formula is a bit of an obsession, so these are must when we fly. This time I was at the tail end of a cold so I brought along these. Honestly, the Wellness Formula is super strong, so since I started taking them I've stopped taking Vitamin C, but you can add that in too. While in Berlin, I got a sore throat and picked up these lozenges for the plane home. It helps that the packaging is very cute.
